Progress with the Guest/family room

Hi friends! I’ve been working in the guest bedroom (which doubles as a family room) over the past month or so trying to warm things up in there and make it more inviting.  New task lighting, a few barn doors and a new sofa were on my wish list to help get me there.

I found two lamps at Homegoods in the clearance aisle that were in need of some TLC.  I took them home, patched the cracks up with some spackle and gave them a fresh coat of paint.

Next, I wanted to cover up the wall mounted air conditioner somehow.  So? I convinced the mister to help me make a few sliding barn doors to cover it up and become a statement piece in the room.

Last piece to the puzzle was finding a sofa big enough to sprawl out on for a nap yet small enough to maneuver around and access the bar and desk areas. Since I don’t have a lot of extra time to go furniture shopping, I decided to take the plunge and order a sofa online.  (Gasp) I know, sounds a little scary buying something A. that big and B. a little pricey online- having never sat in it or seen it in person.  I did it anyway and am pretty happy with the result.

Here are a few tips if you are considering purchasing something similar online:

1.Read the reviews.  I like to thoroughly read through the reviews, both good and bad to try and get as much information as possible about the item.  Reviews with customer photos are the most helpful because you can truly get a clear idea of what your buying under “normal circumstances.” Sellers do an amazing job doctoring up photos showing their products in the best light possible so, if the photo from Jane and Joe looks good – chances are the item will be as pretty as pictured when its in your own home.

2. Shop around.  Not all websites are equally priced, meaning you can find the same item on many different sites all at different prices.  I’d suggest doing a search using a specific characteristic of the item.  You’d be amazed how many different “names” are given to the same piece of furniture.

3. If you’re not in a huge hurry to make the purchase, sign up for the email list on whichever site you’re on, put the item in your cart and let it sit for a few days.  More often than not you’ll get a reminder email that the item is still sitting in your cart, along with a discount code to entice you to buy.  I’m always glad to save a few extra bucks.

I’d love to hear from you if you try this out and have success!

Thank you for stopping by today, I hope you have a fantastic weekend!
