A Mother’s Day Gift

Craigslist is one of my favorite places to find really inexpensive furniture just begging for new life.  Last year around Mother’s day I’d been eyeing up a hutch that had been sitting on Craigslist for weeks.  I watched the price fall and fall, and finally at $15 I figured I’d give it a try.  Happy Mother’s day to me! Here’s what the piece looked like before a little sprucing up:

I seem to always have leftover paint on hand so off to the storage room I went to check out my options.  Luckily I had primer and some paint from my sunroom (Benjamin Moore Rockport Grey). I first gave it a light sanding and a good dusting.  Next I used painters putty to fill in the floral etched design (just not really my style).  I then gave it one coat of primer and one coat of paint.  Since I have little ones I decided to take out the glass on the doors and I was pleased to find that chicken wire was behind them.  LOVE chicken wire.  So rustic.  Last I had remembered a random free mirror I picked up that was dangerously leaning against the wall in my sunroom – it just happened to be the perfect size to fit in the back (some things are just meant to be).  Used a few screw clamps to hold the mirror in place and we were in business.

Here is the hutch today:

Ah yes, after looking closer at my photos I did add two mirrored knobs from Hobby Lobby for an extra pop.  They catch the light and sparkle.  They also were 50% off.  (Couldn’t spend more on the hardware than the piece itself right?)  I used two glass pulls for the bottom doors that were left over from (spoiler alert) when I took down all my upper cabinets.  So, all in we’re looking at $27.  Not too shabby for something that I use daily as a storage unit for water, paper towels, glasses and other various dinnerware.

Next time you’re looking for a gift for someone (perhaps even a Mother’s day present) don’t be afraid to get a little creative and check out Craigslist.  A little tip, lots of people move in spring time so Craigslist is crawling with deals!  And don’t shy away from bargaining a little.  Worst someone can say is “no.” And my last little piece of advice is if you do want to paint something and don’t have extra paint just lying around, Home Depot can match any color under the sun and you can buy a small sample size for about $4.  Many times that’s plenty for a piece of furniture.   Happy Hunting!
