Updating a chippy back door
So we had this back door…Yes, she’s charming with her chippy red paint. And, if it weren’t for the freshly painted shed right next to her, she might have stayed this way.
I hit up the good old paint cabinet (A great resource for projects like this one where I have little time/0$ budget for) and decided to use Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore. It’s almost black with a hint of blue which I think, compliments the hinges of said nearby shed.
Painting the door a bold color just wasn’t enough charm for me so I did a little brainstorming. Just as I’d come to a ‘final’ decision (literally scissors in hand cutting the letters to spell out the word, “field”) the memories came flooding back. As a kid, some of my fondest memories of summertime were spent catching fireflies in the field next to our house. Bingo.
Here’s a quick tutorial:
I printed the word “Fireflies” out on the computer using the font called “elephant.” I typically like to cut out the inside of the letters and use it as a stencil, but since we were nearing dinner time (AKA the bewitching hour) I tried a different method: Chalk the back of the printed word, tape it to the door (or whichever surface you are painting) and outline the word with a pen. (Pencil would work too, you are just making an impression of the chalk). Remove the paper and you will see a chalk imprint on your surface. Next, take a paintbrush and carefully fill in the letters. Repeat until you have a bold result. Stand back, enjoy!
I added one more coat of wrought Iron on the door and used a dry cloth to remove excess chalk from the lettering.)
Thank you for stopping in! Hope I’ve inspired you to add a little bit of charm to your home too.
