Rack ’em up

Not too long ago, I fell in love with this cup rack from DecorSteals (and if you’re new to them – you must stop what you’re doing and sign right up at www.decorsteals.com for daily emails with deals on fabulous farmhouse décor):

But, I just didn’t have the space for it (40″ tall was just too big).  That, and I KNEW we could make something just like it.  It was then that I’d remembered bringing home these two things from Grammy’s basement:

A few times I’d passed them by… but I just couldn’t leave them behind.  And now, I know why:

With just a little imagination, we created our own, for free, with things we’d already had.  It just happens to fit this space perfectly.  Meant to be?  I think so.

Here’s how we did it:

First, I stained the pallet with Minwax Provincial stain.

Then, I spray painted the wooden dowels black. While those were drying, I brushed a coat of white paint onto the pallet, Like so:

Next I took the hand sander to the pallet to give it a distressed look.  Then, the Mr. cut a 45 degree angle on a spare piece of MDF and used it as a guide to drill in 20 holes equally spaced on alternating boards. Lastly, we used wood glue to secure the wooden dowels.  Now we have a unique piece for our “farmhouse” Kitchen

Thanks for popping in!

  1. This turned out great! Way to go for thinking outside the box and using what you have. Your rack is beautiful and probably more functional at this size.

    1. Thank you! Yes, I’m loving how it fits this space perfectly. It’s so fun to shop my home for items that can be re-created into something useful. Have you tried this in your own home?
